Mojiko Port, a port town facing the Kanmon Straits

Moji-ku, Kitakyushu City is a scenic place surrounded by the sea on three sides and blessed with much nature.
It faces Shimonoseki City on the other side of the Kanmon Straits, only 650 meters at its narrowest point, and is a historical place that recalls the sad history of the fall of the Heike clan, known for the Battle of Dannoura.
The area near the Kanmon Bridge is also known as "Hayatomo-no-seto," a difficult point for maritime traffic where currents can exceed 10 knots (18 km/h), and an average of 500 ships sail through the area each day.
The tidal waves of the Kanmon Straits and the whistles of ocean-going vessels have been selected by the Ministry of the Environment as one of the "100 Soundscapes of Japan to Preserve".

The sound of the sea and the whistles of ocean-going vessels in the Kanmon Straits have been selected by the Ministry of the Environment as one of the 100 best soundscapes in Japan to preserve.
Growing into a tourist destination full of straits and historical romance

In 1889, Moji Port was designated as a special export port by the government, and has developed into an international trading port with regular shipping routes to countries around the world.
As an important international trading hub, trading companies and banks were eager to open branches in Moji.
Even today, Moji Port still retains quaint buildings constructed during its prosperous period (from the Meiji era to the early Showa era).

Then, in 1995, the Mojiko Port Retro District was opened, centered on the Mojiko Port's first boat pool.

The "Mojiko Station" (reopening in March, 2019), which has been restored after 6 years of conservation and repair work, the "Former Moji Mitsui Club", "Former Osaka Merchant Marine", "Former Moji Customs", and other historical buildings that remind us of the prosperity of Moji in the past, the "Kyushu Railway Memorial Museum" that was converted from the Kyushu Railway Headquarters building, the "Premier Hotel Mojiko" designed by world-famous Italian architect Aldo Rossi, the "Dalian Friendship Memorial Hall (former International Friendship Memorial Library)" that is a replica of a Russian building in Dalian, China, a city of friendship, and the "Dalian Friendship Memorial Hall" that was built in 1937. The "Dalian Friendship Memorial Hall (former International Friendship Memorial Library)," a replica of Russian architecture in the friendly city of Dalian, China, and the "Kanmon Kaikyo Museum (reopened in September 2048)," an indoor tourist facility with a strait as its theme, attract many tourists every year.
